Easy Bone Broth in a slow cooker

Bone broth is one of those healing ancestral foods. It is a wonderful source of collagen, protein and minerals. It is also so easy to make and customize to your preferences!

It is a very healing food for the gut, and by extension the whole body, it is hydrating, comforting, and helps to fill the gaps of a modern diet.

Here is a basic recipe:

-fill slow cooker 1/2-3/4 way full of bones*

-fill the rest of the slow cooker with water

-2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

-a couple pinches of salt

-2-3 tablespoons of astragalus root**

-any herbs or veggie scraps you want (but it can also be nice to keep it more plain for more versatility later, like bone broth hot chocolate!)

Turn the slow cooker to low, put lid on and leave for around 24 hours, strain and jar! The bones can also be ran a second time! They don't make as strong of a broth, but still a good addition to soups!

Occasionally check on the water levels, you may need to add a cup here or there to make sure it's still covering the bones.

Store in glass jars and keep in fridge, freezer, or even can!

*bones- you really can use any, I like to use the bones from 2 whole chickens after I roast them. You want to leave all the cartilage and bits, the slow cooker will turn all of that into magical broth! Things like chicken feet and beef knuckles will give you a really nice thick broth full of bioavailable collagen. You can also roast the bones beforehand for a deeper flavor!

Apple cider vinegar- the acidity helps to draw out the collagen and minerals from the bones!

**astragalus root- a mentor of mine mentioned adding this to her bone broth and now I do it every time, it has a mild flavor but amazing health benefits! The goodness of the dried root is best extracted from long processes, so this is a wonderful way to incorporate this herb. It is thought to be a powerful immune system support, especially with deep immune and autoimmune issues. I plan on making a post about this herb soon, so make sure you are subscribed :)

Now with this bone broth, you can do anything! Make soups or chilis, drink plain, drink spiced and herbed, blend into drinks, use your imagination! Enjoy!
